Army Body Fat Calculator
This Army body fat calculator uses the 2026 latest standard: waist-to-height ratio, not a neck tape, to pass or fail body composition. Enter height and navel waist. Results appear as you type. Neck still estimates the old DoD percent so you can compare.

The 2026 latest standard, in one ratio
The live result that counts on a record day is not a percent. Army Directive 2026-13 made waist-to-height ratio the only body-composition screen, effective 7 July 2026. Measure height in stocking feet. Measure waist at the navel, typically to the next half inch down. Divide waist by height. Truncate to three decimal places. Do not round. Below 0.550 passes. 0.550 and above fails. Rank, MOS, age, and sex do not move that line.
Worked example: 70 inches tall, 34 inches at the navel. 34 / 70 = 0.485, which truncates to 0.485 and passes. Same Soldier at 38.5 inches: 38.5 / 70 = 0.550 exactly, which fails. The max passing waist at 70 inches is 38.0 inches (0.542). The result panel shows that next bar as soon as you type.
There is no AFT score that exempts you. Army Directive 2025-17's 465-point exemption is gone. If the ratio fails, the Army Body Composition Program path starts, even with a 500 AFT. Use the Army PT Calculator for event points, then come back here for the composition screen that sits beside the test.
What still exists if you enter neck
An army body fat calculator with neck is the old DoD circumference method. Men: waist minus neck, then a log10 formula against height. Women: waist plus hip minus neck. That is the army tape test calculator most NCOs still remember from DA Form 5501. The Army rescinded that tape. This form still asks for neck (and hip for women) so you can compare a unit archive or a private log. The percent is labeled rescinded. It does not pass or fail you.
Male percent = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. Female percent = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387. Measurements in inches. If waist is not larger than neck (men), or waist plus hip is not larger than neck (women), the formula is invalid and the page says so instead of inventing a number.
Related search "New Army tape test calculator 2026" is why the 2026 latest standard badge sits at the top. The new test is not a new tape. It is no tape. A page that still leads with neck, hip, and a 20-36% cap is scoring a retired rule.
Legacy AR 600-9 percent body fat caps
Historical only. These age bands no longer pass or fail a Soldier. Shown because people still compare the old army tape test calculator output to a cap.
| Age | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| 17-20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21-27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28-39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
How this relates to the army height and weight calculator
The army height and weight calculator on this site is the same 0.550 rule, laid out as height versus maximum navel waist. Body fat and height-weight are not two chances anymore. They are one screen. If you fail WHtR, you cannot "tape out." If you pass WHtR, a screening-weight table cannot fail you. Open the height and weight tables when you want every height from 58 to 80 inches in one chart. Stay here when you also want the old neck formula beside the live ratio.
Weight in pounds is optional on the height-weight page and unused here. The Army no longer uses a maximum weight by height to decide body composition. Logging weight is fine for your own trend. It is not a pass line.
Measure the same way your unit will measure: height on a stadiometer or against a wall, no boots. Waist at the navel, not the narrowest point of the torso, tape snug but not compressing skin. Truncation matters. 38.49 / 70 is 0.549 and passes. 38.50 / 70 is 0.550 and fails. Half-inch tape resolution is why the max-waist table steps by 0.5 inch.
If you fail: ABCP is the next administrative bar
2026 has no rank-based body fat cap. A sergeant and a private share 0.550. The next bar after a fail is administrative, not a looser number for a higher grade. Units enroll Soldiers who fail body composition in the Army Body Composition Program. A high AFT does not skip that. Use the next-bar line in the result panel: it tells you how many inches at the navel you must lose to get under 0.550, and it restates the max waist for your height.
Train the waist you measure, not the waist you wish the tape sat on. Diet, sleep, and a run of duty days with a smaller navel measurement move the ratio. Event work on the Army AFT Score Chart still matters for promotion packets. It does not replace this screen.

Army body fat FAQ
What is the Army body fat standard?
From 7 July 2026 the Army body fat standard is a waist-to-height ratio below 0.550 for every Soldier. That is the 2026 latest standard. Age-banded percent caps (20-26% male, 30-36% female) from AR 600-9 no longer decide pass or fail.
How is Army body fat measured?
Measure height and waist at the navel in inches. Divide, then truncate to three decimal places (do not round). That is the current Army body fat percentage calculator in practice, even though the output is a ratio, not a tape-test percent.
How do you calculate Army body fat with a tape?
The legacy DoD method used neck and waist for men, and neck, waist, and hip for women, then a log10 formula. The Army rescinded that tape, DA Form 5501, and the 465 AFT exemption. This page still estimates the old percent so you can compare, labeled as rescinded.
Can a high AFT score exempt Army body fat?
No. Army Directive 2025-17's 465-point exemption was rescinded with the 2026 body composition change. WHtR is the sole screen.
What cluster does army calculate body fat cover?
Searches for army body fat calculator, army body fat percentage calculator, and army calculate body fat all land on this page. The live result is WHtR. The tape block is historical only.
Does a new Army tape test calculator 2026 still use neck?
No. The 2026 latest standard dropped circumference tape. Neck and hip do not pass or fail you. They only rebuild the old DoD percent so you can compare a unit archive.
